RAIN GOD

Austria

With only a week to complete the construction on the Austrian school, the weather had to cooperate because classes were beginning in a matter of weeks. Yet our 30 team members were met with six full days of cloudy, wet skies which made our puddy moist, our spackle spoty, and the roof impossible to work on. What should have taken one day, took two.

We were so excited to see the clouds rolled back and the sun shining as we awoke on our final day in Graz, Austria. The team had planned to spend the day shopping before boarding our plane home in the afternoon, but instead we took the opportunity for clear skies to work on the roof.

Six of our teammates climbed onto the roof to begin work, while the rest of us wrapped up the final touches inside. It wasn’t even an hour into our workday before rain drops began pounding on the roof. Really? We were so close to finishing the work that we set out to do here.

Then we began to hear sounds from the roof, which were far louder and more powerful than the thunder had been that week. They were screams of laughter and joy.

What could these guys be so happy about? We’ve waited all week to work on this roof and the small chance we had to complete it has just diminished with the clouds opening up and dumping water on our hopes. One of our teammates, Lukas, came rushing into the school to announce a miracle.

We all wondered why Lukas was the only teammate running in the building? Were the rest of them still working on the roof in the rain? That can’t be safe.

We all listened intently as Lukas conveyed the miracle. He said, “As we were working on the roof the clouds moved quickly above us and rain began to fall. Marco stood up frustrated at the rain messing up our day and reached out his hand to the sky. With all the faith he had, Marco pointed to the sky and said, ‘In Jesus Name, I command this rain to stop.’ Immediately the rain stopped.”

We all stood in amazement, because the story that Lukas was telling us did not match what our eyes were seeing out the window. Surely he is confused because we see rain outside.

Then Lukas led us outside into the rain to see the miracle for ourselves. Indeed, God had honored Marco’s faith and stopped the rain over the roof. It was dry as the men continued to work to complete the roof they started, while the rain continued around the school soaking us all to the bone.

There is power in the name of Jesus.

DEAF GIRL HEALED

Philippines

There she was again standing at the door of the school room, like she was waiting for something. Every week I would attempt to speak to this nine year old Filipina girl and every week she would just stare at me. I could tell she wanted something, but she would never respond. She would just stand patiently staring at me. I finally started using my hands to communicate after discovering that she had not been able to speak or hear since birth. Every week my heart would cry out in compassion and I would say to myself, “Khristina, pray for that girl! God can heal her!” But every week, my complacency and fear of the unknown won and I walked away watching Rosa still unable to hear or speak.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Austria

Simon had been experiencing high fever for two days that an over the counter medicine wasn’t helping. There were no other symptoms like running nose, dizziness or cold chills to make him think it was the flu. So, he decided to go see the doctor.

The doctor was puzzled to discover that there were no other symptoms. Fever is usually a symptom of the root of a bigger issue, so the doctor ran a few tests. All tests were normal.

On the way home from the doctors office, Simon began to pray, “Lord, why am I suffering from such high fever?” The Lord reminded him of the words he had been speaking when he would get angry. . .

  • When someone cuts you off in traffic, you say, “That just burns me up!”
  • If your wife nags you or your boss harps on you about something, you say, “That just burns me up!”

Simon thought to himself, “Could this really be the cause of the fever? Surely not!” Then he heard the Lord say, “Yes, it is. You need to break the power of these words you’ve spoke over your body.”

The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong and his mother’s extensive internet search didn’t yield any results, so Simon decided to trust God. He prayed out loud, “Lord, forgive me for speaking death over my body, instead of speaking life. In Jesus Name, I break the power of these words over my life. I invite your Word and truth to govern my speech and my body.”

As soon as he said, “Amen,” he physically began to feel the fever decrease. When he arrived at home and took his temperature, it was true. God had healed him and the fever was gone.

Wild, huh? Who knew that the words we speak has so much power in them. Let’s look at what the Word of God says about the power of our words…..

  • “So also, the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.” James 3:5
  • “Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on a person’s lips bring satisfaction. Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.” Proverbs 18:20-21
  • “No weapon formed against YOU shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from Me, says the LORD.” Isaiah 54:7

Let’s not forget the golden rule our parents used to tell us as kids and we swore we would never say as an adult, “If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything all.”

Sticks and Stones

Africa

The hot sun bore down on my skin through the window opening that provided very little airflow. The hour felt late, but it was only 1:00 pm in the afternoon. This was a special day because the church service would be the first official service of a new church plant. The worship was amazing, but half-way through I started experiencing extreme pain and discomfort in the middle of my back. Twice this week, I remember experiencing fever or inflammation like pain on both sides of my spinal column running down my back. I don’t remember picking up anything heavy or injuring my back. Why would the pain come and leave, then come back again?

Just like I would pray for anyone else, I reached around and placed my hands on my back. I spoke to the pain and commanded it to go, in Jesus Name!

Nothing happened.

That can’t be right either. Hummmm…… I thought for a moment and prayed again. Still, nothing happened.

“God, what is going on? Why is the pain still there?” I asked.

God’s response to my question was monumental in my life. It not only brought healing physically, but it brought healing emotionally and spiritually. He said, “Khristina, there is someone who is “backbiting” (or talking bad about you) and you need to break those words being spoken over you.” So, I did what He told me. I said, “In Jesus Name, I break every word that is being spoken against me that does not line up with the word and will of God.”

The pain immediately left.

Let’s take a minute and soak this in.

Yep, God said that someone was speaking bad about me and it was making my back hurt. Weird, I know. Let me explain.

We find in Proverbs 18:21 that “words” have more power than we could ever imagine. It says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

The old “nana nana boo boo” saying we used as kids, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” is not exactly true. As a matter of fact, we find out as an adult that it’s “words” that bring more pain than a physical wound. It’s the “words,” that someone you loved said to you 20 years ago, that still bring tears to your eyes today. It’s words that pastors or “Christians” have spoken years ago that we choose to be mad at God about today.

There are so many wonderful truths to teach concerning the power of words in our life, but we are going to focus on how they affect on our bodies. If “the tongue has the power of life and death,” then how much more does it have the power to affect our bodies?
