Overhaul

Guatemala

Most of the time when praying for people, we may pray two or three times before seeing complete healing. They may feel better after the first prayer and the healing will continue the more we pray, but this was not the case for Gabor, a mature Mayan gentlemen. He received an overhaul by Jesus.

Years of hard labor was heavily marked on Gabor’s face as he approached a team member and myself. The interpreter soon realized that one of his ailments was deafness in one ear, as he screamed loudly for the sweet gentlemen to hear him.

Despite the loud noise of our interpreter, this gentle man standing before us spoke in a soft tone. Good thing he did, because he continued to explain a series of painful places in his body. One of which was his prostate area. The other was in his esophagus. Both of which prevented him from sleeping at night.

If that wasn’t enough, Gabor continued, “As long as we are here tonight, let’s take care of all the sickness. It’s hard for me to see too.” Gabor was living up to the meaning of his name, “God’s bravest man.” His faith stood tall and God was listening.

“God forgives all our sins and heals all of our diseases.”  Psalms 103:3

One by one, we tested each ailment.  Gabor was experiencing issues with his vision.  We gave him a piece of paper with writing on it at a normal font and he could not read it. When we asked him loudly to read a large sign with large font, he could read it with no issues. He also shared that he was in a lot of pain in the two previous areas mentioned.

So, we began to pray one by one for each ailment.

After we prayed, we tested each area of his body for healing. First we tested his ears. The interpreter stood behind Gabor and said, “Can you hear me?”  Yes, came the answer.  Then the interpreter moved back a few steps and asked a different question.  Soon smiles began to form on our faces, Gabor answered immediately.  Still again, the interpreter moved several feet back and the echoing words confirmed that God had healed Gabor’s hearing.

Then we asked about the pain in his esophagus and prostate area – all pain was gone!

Go ahead…. Take a minute to wipe the tears and jump around the room.  That’s what we were doing!  But, it’s not over.

Remember, his eyes….Gabor couldn’t read a normal font size.  We gave him the same piece of paper and asked him to read it.  He could see the normal font size now.

This man walked away with new eyesight, new hearing, no pain in his prostate or esophagus!  God heals ALL of our diseases!

Faith as a Child

Guatemala

I watched the beautiful Mayan child clinged to her mother as I held out my arms to hold her. A familiar reaction I have experienced in other parts of the world, especially when being introduced to a white woman for the first time. I imagine if I had only been raised in one culture, language, and ethnicity my reaction would be similar. At least she wasn’t crying or screaming like some children I met in Africa.

“My daughter, Itzel, is not sick, but will you pray a general blessing over her?” the mother asked.

I knew it would be God’s love that cast out all fear in Itzel’s heart concerning me.    So, I asked my interpreter to put her hand on the child and then I gently put my hand on top of hers.  The little girl held on even tighter to her mother as I prayed.  Not only was my bright white skin shining in this girls eyes, but now I was touching her. I could tell by her facial expressions that things were not getting easier and her realm of safety was getting smaller and smaller.

Everyone had their eyes closed, intently receiving the prayers being offered up for this child.  The interpreter was not conveying my prayer to the mother, only listening.  Thirty seconds into the prayer I watched Itzel’s body relax and pull away from her mother. She un-tucked her arms from her fragile face and reached out with her palms up towards God. The fear in her eyes was gone as she closed them and rested in the presence of God with her arms lifted high.

“God’s love casts out all fear.”  1 John 4:18

It wasn’t the words I spoke, because no one could understand them.  It wasn’t through a hug or a smile, because she didn’t want to touch me and everyone’s eyes were closed.  It was through God’s love and presence that Itzel felt peace and felt God’s presence.

There is power in prayer.

I encourage you to pray for someone you know that is facing hardship in their life right now.  “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in Him.”  1 John 4:16

“I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”Luke 18:17 & Mark 10:15

Seeing is Believing

Guatemala

Her head was hanging so low and covered by her black silky hair, that I wasn’t sure how Valeria could see her next step as she slowly shuffled towards me and a friend. We could tell that she came wearing her best clothing and possibly the only nice clothing she owned.  Through her shame Valeria explained how she could not read the assignments that her teachers were giving her at school.

Tears began to form in this young Mayan girl’s eyes as she continued, “The doctor said my eyesight is bad and reading glasses won’t even help me.”

I could barely see her eyes as her long, beautiful hair covered her face.  “Can you look at me, Valeria?” I asked.

She raised her head with a smile as I explained how beautiful she was.  We gave her a piece of paper to read, but she could not see the words.  So, we prayed that the same God who healed the blind man would heal this teenager’s eyesight.

After prayer, we gave the paper back to her to read again.  Soon rivers of tears flooded her face as she raised her head up high in awe.  Valeria could now read the letters on the page before her.  Not only did she receive her eyesight, she also received her confidence back.

God is still the same yesterday, today and forever.  He is the God who heals.

Thank you, Jesus!

12

Guatemala

His weathered hat matched his sun scorched skin, as he approached me for prayer. “I have back pain, severe knee pain, and thyroid problems,” he explained. He was a man of few words, but I could tell by the look on his face that he came expecting God to heal him.

So, I asked, “On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = little pain, 10 = extreme pain), where does your pain rate?”  “Nine,” he said.

My friend, our interpreter, and I prayed together that God would permeate his body with His healing power. After a minute or so, he shared that the pain level had decreased, but it still remained.

I realized that one of his legs looked shorter than the other.  When I inquired, he said, “I’ve had 12 surgeries on my left leg.  In the process they have removed some of my bones, which makes one leg shorter than the other.”

With his permission, I asked that he sit down in a chair and measured his legs to find indeed his left leg was shorter than his right leg.  Together we prayed again that all pain would leave his back & knee and that the shorter leg would grow out.  Soon his reserved manner turned to clapping and screaming in excitement as he felt his leg growing out to its normal length.

As my interpreter and new friend rubbed their eyes to ensure they were seeing this happen before their eyes. The left leg grew out to match the length of his right leg.  Once I measured them again to ensure the legs were the same length, I returned his legs to the floor. Immediately he got up and walked around with no more pain in any of his body.

What the doctor’s tried to fix 12 times, God healed in less than 12 minutes.

Thank you, Jesus!

Hearing Me Softly

Guatemala

The midnight rain was the culprit for the muddy hillside we were hiking on this warm, humid morning.  Each step seemed like the last before we slid down the side of the steep mountainside, though it didn’t slow us down much.  Neither did the long skirt I had to wear for this journey, which kept getting in the way of using my hands for additional support.  The rain finally slowed as we soon reached the top and began to make our way through the tall grass and trees.  Our destination took us to a small humble abode of a 90-year-old man and his wife, Estuerdo and Evelyn.

Myself, two American friends, and three Guatemalan friends were excited to see what God had planned for this couple.  The last two days were filled with miracles in more than 100 people. We saw God heal them of all kinds of sicknesses.  While reminiscing of God’s goodness, we explained to our Guatemalan friends, “when we reach this couples’ home, you will be the one to pray for them to receive healing. God can use you just as He can use us to lay hands on the sick and see them healed.  God does not show favor.” Romans 2:11

My heartbeat skipped as I stopped to take in the beauty of our Creator’s masterpiece before me.  Surely Estuerdo and Evenlyn would be billionaires with this prime real estate in any Western country located 140,000 feet above sea level and nothing but breathtaking mountainsides touched only by the sun.
