THE GOLDEN RULE

Austria

Simon had been experiencing high fever for two days that an over the counter medicine wasn’t helping. There were no other symptoms like running nose, dizziness or cold chills to make him think it was the flu. So, he decided to go see the doctor.

The doctor was puzzled to discover that there were no other symptoms. Fever is usually a symptom of the root of a bigger issue, so the doctor ran a few tests. All tests were normal.

On the way home from the doctors office, Simon began to pray, “Lord, why am I suffering from such high fever?” The Lord reminded him of the words he had been speaking when he would get angry. . .

  • When someone cuts you off in traffic, you say, “That just burns me up!”
  • If your wife nags you or your boss harps on you about something, you say, “That just burns me up!”

Simon thought to himself, “Could this really be the cause of the fever? Surely not!” Then he heard the Lord say, “Yes, it is. You need to break the power of these words you’ve spoke over your body.”

The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong and his mother’s extensive internet search didn’t yield any results, so Simon decided to trust God. He prayed out loud, “Lord, forgive me for speaking death over my body, instead of speaking life. In Jesus Name, I break the power of these words over my life. I invite your Word and truth to govern my speech and my body.”

As soon as he said, “Amen,” he physically began to feel the fever decrease. When he arrived at home and took his temperature, it was true. God had healed him and the fever was gone.

Wild, huh? Who knew that the words we speak has so much power in them. Let’s look at what the Word of God says about the power of our words…..

  • “So also, the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.” James 3:5
  • “Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on a person’s lips bring satisfaction. Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.” Proverbs 18:20-21
  • “No weapon formed against YOU shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from Me, says the LORD.” Isaiah 54:7

Let’s not forget the golden rule our parents used to tell us as kids and we swore we would never say as an adult, “If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything all.”

Sticks and Stones

Africa

The hot sun bore down on my skin through the window opening that provided very little airflow. The hour felt late, but it was only 1:00 pm in the afternoon. This was a special day because the church service would be the first official service of a new church plant. The worship was amazing, but half-way through I started experiencing extreme pain and discomfort in the middle of my back. Twice this week, I remember experiencing fever or inflammation like pain on both sides of my spinal column running down my back. I don’t remember picking up anything heavy or injuring my back. Why would the pain come and leave, then come back again?

Just like I would pray for anyone else, I reached around and placed my hands on my back. I spoke to the pain and commanded it to go, in Jesus Name!

Nothing happened.

That can’t be right either. Hummmm…… I thought for a moment and prayed again. Still, nothing happened.

“God, what is going on? Why is the pain still there?” I asked.

God’s response to my question was monumental in my life. It not only brought healing physically, but it brought healing emotionally and spiritually. He said, “Khristina, there is someone who is “backbiting” (or talking bad about you) and you need to break those words being spoken over you.” So, I did what He told me. I said, “In Jesus Name, I break every word that is being spoken against me that does not line up with the word and will of God.”

The pain immediately left.

Let’s take a minute and soak this in.

Yep, God said that someone was speaking bad about me and it was making my back hurt. Weird, I know. Let me explain.

We find in Proverbs 18:21 that “words” have more power than we could ever imagine. It says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

The old “nana nana boo boo” saying we used as kids, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” is not exactly true. As a matter of fact, we find out as an adult that it’s “words” that bring more pain than a physical wound. It’s the “words,” that someone you loved said to you 20 years ago, that still bring tears to your eyes today. It’s words that pastors or “Christians” have spoken years ago that we choose to be mad at God about today.

There are so many wonderful truths to teach concerning the power of words in our life, but we are going to focus on how they affect on our bodies. If “the tongue has the power of life and death,” then how much more does it have the power to affect our bodies?
